Greenland is a large coastal region in northwest Europe. The Greenland ice sheet covers more than 35 percent of the Greenland Island and it is the largest island among all islands in the area. As a consequence of this large mass of ice, the temperature in this region is cold and people who live there have adapted to survive in these conditions. But a large part of Greenland is covered by land and this is where the Greenland Sumit Bank comes in. This bank is made from glacial deposits that are extremely rare but also very large. This large area is home to approximately two thousand glaciers. Each one has its own drainage system and ice field. It is the only way glacial meltwater can be drained into the ocean. This is because the ice moves slowly and the currents in the area can keep large volume of ice moving for millions of years. Scientists find this fascinating process of water draining and ice melting. They study this process in detail through research expeditions like the Greenland Ice Study. During summers the ice grows very large and this causes the sea ice to thin and extend beyond the Greenland ice line. The North Atlantic ocean volume increases due to the melting of snow and ice, which helps keep the cold air out. As a result the chilly air mass can expand upward towards the southern polar areas and this is a phenomenon that has been noticed in the past centuries. By comparing the present with the ancient times scientists have been able to conclude that the present warm climate is due to the large melt of sea ice and this process is also likely to happen in the future. Researchers believe that the winter months could have the greatest impact on weather conditions due to sea ice changes. Temperature variations are known to vary in this period and a reduction in the thickness of the ice could mean warm climate. It could also lead to stronger winds and more frequent rainfall. The warm air is likely to help generate clouds in the winter and this will consequently cause a change in the wind patterns. All these factors could lead to stormy weather conditions that could be accompanied with light rain. There are some experts who do not believe that a sea ice breakup will have any serious impact on the weather conditions in the North Atlantic. They believe th |
